The Horse Beatitudes - 1
So Jim stood on the ledge, and before he jumped he told me all there is to know about fixing the fuse on a Proctor-Silex toaster. As he fell toward the pavement sparks flew from his lips. Some reached me before he splatted. They plucked at my eyelids and smoked my cigaret, while telling me marvelous ditties from the range - cowpokes and injuns.
It was only months after, and all the while the image of blood and gristle smeared on the pavement in my head, that I broke down and cried for my friend - no, for me for my friend. I saw in that moment what a chunk of my life he had occupied and now it was ripped out of me.
I put on my cheesehead hat and hummed my alma mater under my breath, picked up my slide rule, and went right back to work!

Way out in the wilderness
a Lone Coyote Calls.
Your eyes fix on the shotgun
that's a-hangin' on the wall.
